Obituary for Lois Tenhengel

Shelby - Mrs. Lois Mary Jackson Tenhengel passed away July 27, 2021 at Peak Resources of Cherryville, NC after a brief illness.

Lois was born February 12, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA to Catherine and Edward Jackson. In 1943, her parents and two sisters moved to Charlotte, NC. In 1957, she graduate from Charlotte Catholic High School. After high school, she was a member of the Charlotte Checkerettes and worked at a local insurance company as a secretary until her marriage in 1963 to Edwin Tenhengel. After marrying and having two daughters with Edwin, Lois became interested in healthcare and completed Surgical Technician training at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1972. Lois continued her education and became a Registered Nurse graduating from Central Piedmont Community College in 1976.
During her Nursing career, Lois worked as an Operating Room Nurse, Mother/Baby Nurse and Clinical Educator for Surgical Services. Her true passion, and where she spent the majority of her career, was working in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Lois was notably part of the surgical team performing the first heart transplant in Charlotte. Lois spent many years working with cardiothoracic surgeons and residents at Carolinas Heart Institute at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte until her retirement in 1999. After her retirement, she spent several years traveling with her husband and raising horses, cows, and sheep as dear pets. She was a lover of animals and rescued many during her lifetime including her most special Haley, Gus, and Angus.

In addition to her parents, Lois is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 36 years, Edwin Lawrence Tenhengel, originally from Morris Plains, NJ. and older sister Katherine Jackson Curran.

She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Tenhengel-deVille of Sylva, NC, Laura Appleman-Tenhengel of Grover, NC; and Lois' younger sister, Dorothy Jackson Young of Chester, SC.

A private family memorial will be held to celebrate her life.
