Obituary for Leon "Butch" Sneed

Wilmington - Mr. Leon Jay "Butch" Sneed, 80, formerly of Cherryville, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Butch was born on March 31, 1941 in Lincoln County, NC a son of the late Lester Leon Sneed and Dixie Eva Mullen Sneed. He was a self employed contractor with Sneed Construction and also a teacher. Butch taught carpentry at Cherryville High School and Ashley High School in New Hanover County. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cherryville where he taught the Men's Bible Class for many years. Butch served in the U.S. Army and was a member and past chaplain of Cherryville American Legion Post 100. He also had a great love for fishing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Andy Hartman and a brother Don Carpenter.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Betsy T. Sneed of the home; three daughters, Aryn Weisser and husband Robert of Carolina Beach; Amber Sullivan and husband Michael of Indian Trail and Teresa Sneed Kiser of Weatherford, TX; two brothers, Joe Sneed of Cherryville and Carroll Sneed of Connecticut and seven grandchildren, Seth, Waylon, Sydney, Harper, Robert, Jr., Chris and Taylor.

Mr. Sneed will lie in state from 1:00PM to 5:00PM on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. The family will not be present during this time.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville with Dr. Bill Lowe officiating.
