Obituary for Bruce Blackburn

Shallotte, NC – Mr. Douglas “Bruce” Blackburn, Sr., 67, entered into the Church Triumphant on Monday, September 13, 2021, at New Hanover Medical Center, Wilmington, N.C.

Bruce was born in Spruce Pine, N.C. on February 7, 1954, to the late Jonah Hall Blackburn and Wilma Propst Blackburn. He was a graduate of Cherryville High School in 1972; earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University in 1976. Bruce was a member of the ROTC in 1975. He was an avid reader, enjoyed music, history and was a lover of animals. Bruce was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Cherryville, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Oscar Dorus Blackburn and Ocie Mae Mitchem Blackburn; maternal grandparents, William Everett Propst, Sr. and Georgeanna Mae Wilson Propst; a brother, William Timothy Blackburn, Sr. and a sister in law, Nancy Crawley Blackburn; a special uncle and aunt, Paul & Dorothy Mitchem, as well, as several aunts and uncles.

Those left to cherish memories of Bruce, include his loving and caring wife, Bonnie Hall Blackburn of Shalotte; his son, Douglas B. Blackburn, Jr., his brother, Larry Blackburn and wife Joan, a very special friend, George Beam and wife, Debbie all of Cherryville, NC and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his three special fur babies and companions, Wilma Sue, Helen and Mozart, who kept him laughing with playful exercise.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. G. Scott Homesley officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.

A graveside service will be at 11:00AM on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Jerry Lail officiating.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic attendees are asked to wear mask and practice social distancing.
